Emma was someone who seemed to enjoy being a matyr, doing a job she didn't enjoy and picking up the pieces when a broken Dex came to her. His way of dealing with feeling bad in anyway was to go completely off the rails until someone picked up the pieces. She had taught him to be her little prince so he thought he could do no wrong and didn't appreciate it when he was told he was doing things wrong. We decided that Dex wasn't deliberately nasty, he just didn't know how to think of others before himself as this wasn't something his mother had taught him. We discussed the two main characters and why we thought they behaved the way they did. It's pretty tricky to talk about the end of the book without giving away a massive plot twist but you will know once you've read it why we weren't pleased. A lot of us were very disappointed in the ending of the book, it all came as a bit of a shock that we weren't very happy with. Maybe we had high expectations as it had been made into a film. Many of the bookclub members didn't enjoy this book as much as they thought they would.

Assassination plots, sexual betrayals, murder, suicide, and the fierce play of conflicting loyalties-all these bring into play an intricate abundance of attendant figures, like the rakish Captain Sholto and the appealing but faithless Millicent Henning. Possibly to save Hyacinth, she becomes romantically involved with his fellow conspirator Paul Muniment, a calculating political operative, idealistic and treacherous by turns. The novel’s hero, Hyacinth Robinson, is torn between his loyalty to revolutionary causes-for which he is about to commit an act of violence that may cost him his life-and his taste for the artistic side of aristocratic culture, represented in part by the beautiful, wealthy, compassionate, and yet deceptive Princess of the title. The action ranges from palaces to slums, from London to Paris to Venice and back again. It is a political novel in which anarchists and terrorists conspire within a fin de siècle world of opulence and glamour. The Princess Casamassima was published in 1886, a year that saw riots of the unemployed in London. This structure allows people to explore the poet’s development in more detail, which helps the viewers to understand his early days and the impact after his death. The film is constructed in such a way that it does not tell the story in a linear fashion but rather jumps between the trial, Ginsberg’s early life, and the debut days ( Howl). The animation helps to illustrate the meaning and provide a visual demonstration of the writing, whereas Ginsberg’s narration is essential to understand the source of the ideas and become familiar with the author’s thoughts. The trial involves an extensive analysis of the poem in the context of appropriateness as a piece of literary work. In the case of the movie, there are three critical elements, such as animation, Ginsberg’s speaking, and the trial. I remember thinking certain parts or actions odd, but truthfully it was the way of society. The list of rules and etiquette is essential when considering the behavior of the characters in the stories. It’s always nice to get a visual of the places you’re reading about. There are maps of London, among other cities, listing all the popular haunts and places mentioned in the novels. I’ve been told that some of the novels relate to others via characters and I can match them easily and plan to read them in order. A handy feature of Georgette Heyer’s Regency World is that it lists each novel by year of publication with a summary. I have only read a few of her novels: Powder and Patch, An Infamous Army and Cotillion, though I own about 8 more that I plan to read at some point. Heyer fans will enjoy learning the minute details, such as the jargon or illustrations of fashion and other items spoken of (but perhaps not described in detail) in the novels. Heyer’s novels are referred to throughout, but with plenty of details as to how they relate to the facts and information presented. Whether you’ve read Georgette Heyer or not–or even if you don’t plan to–this book is an enlightening read for history enthusiasts or those simply wishing to learn more about the Regency era. The end surprised me a bit - Hendrix pulls a redemption tale in the middle of the ghost hunt. Add that to the usual every day of retail and things connect to each other in places one does not expect - in some places the story of the prisoners of the past (now ghosts) sound better and less awful than the story of the current employees in the store. So the two women and their by the rules manager, Basil, show up for the shift - and things start getting weirder and weirder very soon.Īs it turns out, there is more that one thing happening and one of them is a very violent set of ghosts. Something weird is happening in the store - and the goal of that night vigil is for them to try to get to the bottom of it. So when she shows for work in that morning, the last she expects is to be tagged for an overnight shift, together with one of the oldest employees, Ruth Anne. She is trying to get transferred but that can only happen if her current boss agrees on that - and they are in the best of a relationships work-wise. Amy is two days away from getting in real trouble over unpaid rent and she really does not care about her soul-killing job. Orsk, an IKEA knock-off, is one of those big box stores where you can buy everything from a fork to a complete set of furniture for your house, all in boxes and easily stackable (and then even have lunch). Hendrix does the latter and does it well. There are two ways to mix horror and humor - you either write a parody of the genre or you write a humorous horror stories. |
